In December 2025 friends and supporters of Birrarung and Birrarung Council gathered at the River side to mark a change in leadership and acknowledge the ongoing work and dedication many River supporters are doing. Adding to the occasion, the Honourable Sonia Kilkenny, MP, Minister for Planning, reflected on her connection with Birrarung, reinforcing the importance of this work for all present.
Guests joined in farewelling inaugural Chairperson Professor Chris Chesterfield, whose leadership has been instrumental in shaping the Council’s work, and warmly welcomed Uncle Andrew Gardiner as the newly appointed Chairperson. For the first time, the Birrarung Council is led by a Victorian Traditional Owner – reflecting the deep and enduring cultural connection and shared responsibility for Birrarung.
In addition to changes in the Birrarung Council, this was also an opportunity to farewell Jane Doolan, outgoing chair of the Yarra Collaboration Committee (YCC), and to welcome Dr Anthony Boxshall as the incoming chair. Birrarung Council looks forward to working closely with the YCC members as they progress the implementation of Burndap Birrarung burndap umarkoo.
Both Chris and Jane have played pivotal roles in advancing collaborative governance for Birrarung, shaping a model that brings together Traditional Owners, government agencies, and community voices. Their legacy will continue to influence the next chapter, providing a strong foundation for deeper cultural recognition, innovative governance, and collaborative action as we progress the implementation of Burndap Birrarung burndap umarkoo and deliver tangible outcomes for the health and future of Birrarung.
